HISTORY: HISTORIC EVENTS & BUILDINGS

Lexington is the birthplace of 4-H and the first county 4-H agent in the nation was in Holmes County. The Lundy Stagecoach House, a home of his family, is the oldest existing structure in Lexington and an architectural gem. The cottage garden was restored in 2004 by the Magnolia Garden Club with a grant from The Principal Financial Group and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

The Church of God in Christ was founded in Lexington and now has a worldwide membership of more than 8 million members. Services at the "Mother Church" are still held each Sunday and Wednesday evening.

Lexington, Mississippi has over 300 buildings and homes on the National Historic Register, more than any other community in Mississippi. We also have three Mississippi Landmark Buildings: the Masonic Building, the Courthouse and the former Flower Mercantile Building, all located on the Courthouse Square. At this time, each of these buildings is in the process of being restored to original architectural condition and full use. Lexington has an established Historic Commission and is a Certified Historic Community.
